“I was born and raised in Los Angeles. After receiving my education from Art Center College of Design, I continue live and work out of Pasadena. My work is rooted in history, I draw inspiration from Dutch masters such as Vermeer, to French modernists like Degas. Down to earth portrayals of everyday life is something I find beautiful and aim to express with my own work.In traditional oil techniques I portray my world through intimate portraits and street scenes. I paint friends and strangers, amidst the subculture of night life and heavy metal in Los Angeles.”
“Valerie Pobjoy has taken techniques inspired from the Dutch masters and French Modernists and has made them her own. Her rich color palate is striking against the velvety shadows with scenes from her everyday life, while her intimate portraits and street scenes show us the beauty of what we might otherwise over-look. From stormy days to sub-culture nightlife, her world is documented and preserved with such care that it inspires us to look at our own life and discover the hidden moments which deserve recognition.” – from Press Release of See The Stars by Emiko Woods for Flower Pepper Gallery
“Pobjoy is taking classical techniques and standing them on their arcane heads. She applies a masters’ hand to the grime under our feet, and, wait for it, makes us actually feel something. She is able to convey so much raw emotion in the most unlikely settings. I look at how she renders the metal kids at shows, and grand symphonic orchestras play in my head. There are sad, lurid tales being told in the silence of the seedy urinals. There’s a theatricality, a noir at work in the simplest of her portraits. She’s honors the history of art in her technique, while creating wholly new content.” – from “Artist of the Year: Valerie Pobjoy” by Keith Dugas (KrossD)

“Documentary and gritty, this smells like the real deal. One of the best paintings of a dirty sink I have ever seen. We’ve all been in this bathroom, alas.”
