Artist Statement and Biography:
Nicole Bruckman is an artist, curator, mother, animal lover, and animal advocate from Cleveland, Ohio. Embracing her passion for art at a very young age, Nicole went on to receive her BFA in illustration from the Columbus College of Art And Design in Columbus, Ohio.

After graduation Nicole began work as a freelance illustrator and designer. Deciding to further pursue her love for painting, Nicole moved to Los Angeles, and began showing her art as well as curating shows at various prominent Los Angeles galleries. Nicole is currently art director at Flower Pepper Gallery in Pasadena, CA.

Compelled by her life’s passions, Nicole’s paintings are inspired by the bond that exists between humans and animals. She creates enchanting and whimsical narratives in which human and animal characters coexist in fantastic and engaging settings. Wild exotic creatures and domesticated animals alike are the guides on a sublimely surreal journey through an endless nocturne. They live in a seemingly utopian realm, in which humans are conscious of the bond between our world and the kingdom of Animalia. These works are created in the hopes that this world may one day exist, and we may recognize and respect the value in all living beings. All of the pieces are acrylic on wood panel.

“Nicole’s work embarks on a journey to unveil the livelihood of the animal kingdom by creating whimsical and emotionally sincere narratives in which these animal subjects live to embrace their human counterparts. Often, more than not, Nicole’s paintings touch on one of humans most feared and widely misunderstood animals – the Pit Bull. Bruckman’s connection to this often-neglected breed of dog has gifted her the insight to capture their playful and invigorating charm in lucid dream-like paintings.” – blopop Magazine

Inspired by my relationship with my own two rescued pit bulls, I try to present each dog as a unique individual and not just part of a “breed”. I hope that by capturing them in fantastic and playful situations people will see them in a different light, changing the perception that has long plagued them. In this series specifically, the dogs are acting in a symbiotic relationship with their wildlife companions. The dogs portrayed in this series, Gretchen, Edwina, and Precious, were all taken in by Downtown Dog Rescue. Gretchen and Precious have recently been adopted. Queen Edwina, depicted in “Flowers That Fly”, is still waiting for her forever home. Find out more about Edwina, Downtown Dog Rescue, and their other adoptable dogs at www.downtowndogrescue.org
