Artist Statement:
“What drew me to the Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASP, were the women’s unwavering commitment to what they loved to do the most—fly. With no expectations for any recognition (and they didn’t receive any until much later on), they willingly flew experimental aircraft across the country.
Drawing inspiration from their enthusiasm and earnestness, I experimented with different mediums to explore ways to depict the kinetic energy of these pilots. By being more bold and immediate with my mark making, I hope to reflect the members of the WASP—a mixture of bright, fun, and unapologetic attitudes wrapped in packages of badassery.” – Sally Deng
