Artist Statement and Biography:
Nicole Bruckman is an artist, curator, mother, animal lover, and animal advocate from Cleveland, Ohio. Embracing her passion for art at a very young age, Nicole went on to receive her BFA in illustration from the Columbus College of Art And Design in Columbus, Ohio.

After graduation Nicole began work as a freelance illustrator and designer. Deciding to further pursue her love for painting, Nicole moved to Los Angeles, and began showing her art as well as curating shows at various prominent Los Angeles galleries.

Compelled by her life’s passions, Nicole’s paintings are inspired by the bond that exists between humans and animals. She creates enchanting and whimsical narratives in which human and animal characters coexist in fantastic and engaging settings. Wild exotic creatures and domesticated animals alike are the guides on a sublimely surreal journey through an endless nocturne. They live in a seemingly utopian realm, in which humans are conscious of the bond between our world and the kingdom of Animalia. These works are created in the hopes that this world may one day exist, and we may recognize and respect the value in all living beings. All of the pieces are acrylic on wood panel.

Artist Statement:
“My current exploration is to create an impression and extension of real space in ambiguous settings, containing forms reminiscent of recognizable things to give the viewer the opportunity to interpret freely the meaning of each work. I am inspired by natural movements and systems, forces, and forms, specifically celestial objects and nebulous forms. I aim to create new visuals of ambiguous forms, not referencing any one thing in particular; I hope they give the sense of an initial substance of matter that does not have any definite shape or state of being. Protomatter what I have named these forms, this ultimate basis of physical substance, before it has been given form. By creating unrecognizable, textural forms that imitate reality to an extent, there is a distance from the viewer through the ambiguity of the subject, but still a familiar element that allows for a vague conception and deep exploration.”

Artist Biography:
Maggie Chiang is a Taiwanese American full time artist and part time dreamer. Inspired by both places real and fictitious Maggie’s illustrations evoke a longing for adventure and the pursuit of the unknown, exploring impossible landscapes and places unseen. A central theme of her art is the relationship between humanity and nature, oftentimes the underlying thread that ties together her work and establishes her individual artistic voice.

Clients include The New York Times, Washington Post, John Hopkins, Buzzfeed, and others.

Artist Biography:
Raul Pizarro was born in Mexicali, Mexico. He is a self taught-artist who works primarily in oil paints. Living with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, he is forced to constantly shift and reinvent his painting technique with each new physical challenge presented at the varies stages of muscle loss. He lives and works on the fringe of Los Angeles.

Artist Statement:
“I paint every day, knowing that every ounce of strength I put into applying each brush stroke is the measure of life. My muscles aren’t vanishing, they are transforming into permanent echoes on canvas.” Raul Pizarro

Artist Statement about this Solo Exhibition:
“I grew up very introverted especially in public spaces. My body was visibly different due to neuromuscular disease which made me very thin and caused me to walk strangely. Odd stares, whispering and being “othered”, made connecting with others very challenging as a child. For the longest time I didn’t realize my brain was wired from flawed ideas from those early years in my life. These paintings are about those moments where many of those faulted truths started to crumble and the awakening that ensued.

This feral awakening is about finding intrinsic value, connectedness and finding truth in love. Learning to love the bodies we’re in, unearthing the sacred in everything around us and finally being able to reemerge into a life that embraces the path we each must travel.”

On Saturday, May 5th, Flower Pepper Gallery is pleased to present, Feral Awakening, a solo show by Raul Pizarro. Raul’s story is as unique as it is inspiring. Living with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, he is forced to constantly shift and reinvent his painting technique at the various stages of muscle loss. Even with these challenges, his incredibly detailed style shines through. While each painting carries the weight of what he must overcome, it is his inspirational outlook and message of self-reflection and discovery that stirs the spirit and leaves viewers feeling challenged and uplifted.

“I grew up very introverted especially in public spaces. My body was visibly different due to the neuromuscular disease that made me very thin and caused me to walk strangely. Odd stares, whispering and being ‘othered’, made connecting with others very challenging as a child. For the longest time I didn’t realize my brain was wired from flawed ideas from those early years in my life. These paintings are about those moments where many of those faulted truths started to crumble and the awakening that ensued.

This stunning exhibition features realistically painted panda bears acting in whimsically human ways. Each piece is housed in a gilded, hand-sculpted frame that was also created by the artist. With such great attention to detail, each painting feels precious and each charming character seems just as capable of stealing our hearts as the other.

His “Love Is” series is irresistible for many reasons. Each depicts an adorable panda portrait in front of a brightly colored background but to our surprise, and seemingly to these pandas’ as well, they each have a different, much smaller animal seated comfortably on their heads. For example, in “Love is Contemplation,” Raul has painted a giant panda that seems to be deep in thought and considering his situation of having a turtle on his head. Both appear calm and it is surely an amusing image, but one that does effectively invite us to contemplate. These different interpretations of what “love is,” take such a simple form but they are very effective in getting us to look a little deeper into the meaning of love.

In “Little Temple”, a panda is walking through a forest like a graceful Grecian nymph. Behind the branches is a luminous backdrop of stars that radiate light in a way that is both illustrative and magical. In this painting the branches seem to grow into the shape of an arch like we might see in a church, but what is striking is that we don’t know if “Little Temple” refers to the forest, or the panda bear itself. Similarly, in “An Open Heart”, we see the comparison made between an open heart and an open book. We see a panda is seated in front of a romantic background of roses, holding an open book outward for all to see. It is a position of vulnerability and one that feels all too familiar, but this piece’s poignant simplicity is what makes it so relatable and honest. It is this combination where Raul Pizarro truly excels.

Feral Awakening is a surprising exhibition in that immensely deep universal truths are hidden within such adorable messengers. There is much to be uncovered and learned from the symbolism and rich imagery in these paintings and with guides as endearing and trustworthy as these pandas, it is safe to say we are in good hands. The immense intentionality of each piece is perhaps best understood simply by considering the process it takes to create such works. “I paint every day, knowing that every ounce of strength I put into applying each brush stroke is the measure of life. “I was born and raised in Los Angeles. After receiving my education from Art Center College of Design, I continue live and work out of Pasadena. My work is rooted in history, I draw inspiration from Dutch masters such as Vermeer, to French modernists like Degas. Down to earth portrayals of everyday life is something I find beautiful and aim to express with my own work. In traditional oil techniques I portray my world through intimate portraits and street scenes. I paint friends and strangers, amidst the subculture of night life and heavy metal in Los Angeles.”
