On Saturday, February 27th, Flower Pepper Gallery is pleased to present, Moment in Color, featuring work by Paige Jiyoung Moon & Sally Deng. These incredible artists draw their inspiration from the stories that unfold around them, turning even the most mundane occurrences into compelling narratives that feel refreshing for their honesty. These stories are told with immense care and consideration for every detail, texture, and character that all together present our perception of daily life and personal history.
Paige Jiyoung Moon paints to preserve memories. Her process involves sketching the numerous details that surround her in a specific moment that she wishes to remember always. Places she finds interesting, adventures with friends, and memories with family remain present with her long after the moments have passed. Her work acts as a visual diary that elevates even the simplest of activities that brings her happiness. In an interview with New American Paintings, she describes this dedicated and instinctual process. “When I hang out with my friends, I look around the environment where I am and I imagine it as a painting. There are certain times that make me feel like I want to remember everything around me like colors, furniture, and people in the environment.”
Paige paints her life with such honesty that it becomes captivating. In several paintings that take place in her apartment, we see the same worn rug, the same box of Trader Joe’s tissues. We see half-finished puzzles, glasses of wine, and stacks of folded laundry that show the familiar routines that make up the fabric of daily life. She paints moments that excite her and ones that are beloved for the simple joy that they brought to her in the past. After spending time with her work, it is nearly impossible not to re-examine our own details that fill cherished memories. Furniture and layouts of childhood homes, days spent with friends drinking coffee, nights spent watching a movie with a loved one all become part of our own personal history. These paintings remind us to be present where we are and to truly absorb moments that bring us even the simplest happiness.
Similarly, Sally Deng uses her work to examine and tell stories that capture an array of human experience. Often she will choose a subject, create several pieces within that narrative, and allow us to piece them together. Stories of the past and present are given new life as they are shown in Sally’s uniquely textured painting style. Her color palette is subdued but carries with it the tone and energy of what she is depicting. Tales of isolation and bravery, as well as the triumphs and shortcomings of our world are re-interpreted for our consideration. Many of her characters are shown without strong facial-features, creating a void for us to fill with either people that are close to us or ourselves. This immerses us in her commentary where it takes on new life. Suddenly, we can feel the loneliness, helplessness, excitement, or power of those within her pieces. Lives and places that we can empathize with, aspire to be, or simply recognize in a new way. We are able to explore these subjects with her and dive into the worlds that she has so lovingly created.
Both Sally Deng and Paige Jiyoung Moon create spaces that elevate aspects of humanity, which are not often appreciated. Their work is a combination of simplicity and great complexity that is not only compelling, but also very true to life. Amidst the colors, there are moments and emotions we can all recognize and relate to. Moments in the most wonderful colors that reveal our stories are innately our own and also shared by many.
The reception is open to the public and on view until March 22nd, 2016. For purchase inquiries, or to request a VIP Preview Link, please email contact@flower-pepper.com
